The concept of "rooting" — derived from Unix/Linux privilege escalation to root — is not native to Windows’ security model. However, by 2021, a class of automated tools emerged aiming to grant users de facto root privileges (SYSTEM or TrustedInstaller) on Windows 10. This paper analyzes the technical mechanisms employed by these tools (e.g., AutoRuns-for-SYSTEM, Nsudo, PowerRun), evaluates their operational methods against Windows 10 security features (Secure Boot, UAC, PatchGuard), and discusses the associated risks and mitigations.
