If you are a fan of the open-source CHIRP software, you might hit a wall. As of this writing, the daily build of CHIRP does not natively support the UV-10R. The UV-10R uses a slightly different chipset than the standard "UV-5R" family.
Do not try to force the UV-5R driver onto your UV-10R. Users report that this causes "Earpiece volume lock" or "TX Error" messages. | Feature | UV-5R | UV-10R | |----------|--------|---------|
| Error Message | Likely Fix | |---------------|-------------| | “Check connection” | Radio not ON, or cable not fully seated. | | “COM port not found” | Driver not installed or wrong COM port. | | “Timeout” | Try a different USB port; lower baud rate to 4800 in Device Manager. | | “Unknown response” | Radio model mismatch – ensure you have UV-10R software, not UV-5R. |
