Campus Lyfe -ch.1 Beta- -sumatra 3d-

END OF PIECE

INT. HALL C – LECTURE ROOM 104

Desks are arranged in a semicircle. A projector screen shows a spinning beach ball of death.

LECTURER (40s, low-poly beard) Welcome to Simulated Social Systems. In this class, you will navigate procedurally generated relationships, side quests, and group projects. Your grade is an integer between 0 and 255.

A student raises their hand. His face hasn’t loaded—just a generic avatar icon.

STUDENT (UNKNOWN) What happens if we encounter a softlock?

LECTURER You repeat the semester. That’s the beta for you. No save scumming.

Ryan sits next to Maya. A notification pops up:

[SYSTEM] New side quest: “Survive Group Formation” Reward: +5 Sanity, 1 cup of instant coffee. Failure: Permanent social anxiety debuff. Campus Lyfe -Ch.1 BETA- -Sumatra 3D-

RYAN (whisper) Did you get the quest?

MAYA (whispering back) I’m not accepting it. Quest logs are bugged. Last time I accepted one, I had to attend a compulsory fun day.

Suddenly, the room’s lighting shifts. The walls lose their textures—turning into checkerboard purple and black.

LECTURER (calmly) Ah. The void glitch. Everyone stay seated. It will repaint in 3… 2… 1…

The room snaps back to normal. A single desk remains missing.

RYAN (V.O.) Welcome to Campus Lyfe. Where the architecture leaks, the deadlines are server-side, and your social meter drains just by breathing.

INT. FAKULTAS TEKNIK COURTYARD – DAY

Students sit on worn-out benches. Some flicker. A sign reads: “WiFi Zone – Latency may exceed reality.” END OF PIECE INT

Ryan approaches MAYA (19) – she’s leaning against a pillar, reading a physical book. She’s one of the few characters who looks fully rendered.

MAYA (without looking up) You feel that?

RYAN The lag?

MAYA The beta. Look at the sky.

Ryan looks up. The skybox is a low-resolution JPEG of a sunset, even though it’s 9 AM. Clouds move at 8 FPS.

RYAN Sumatra 3D engine. They promised photorealistic. We got… placeholder assets.

MAYA (chuckles) That’s campus life. You either crash or learn to clip through walls.

A SENIOR MENTOR (21) walks past. His character model is enormous—disproportionately tall, sunglasses indoors, holding a clipboard that emits a red glow. RYAN (whisper) Did you get the quest

SENIOR MENTOR (automated voice) Beta testers. Attendance matrix required. Report to Hall C. Or else.

He T-poses for three seconds, then vanishes.

RYAN (deadpan) See? Unreliable physics.

After 47 minutes of wandering (and three hard crashes), I found the Beta Testing Lab. It is located in the basement of a building that is visually identical to the laundry mat.

The lab is a single room with 14 identical computer terminals. Each terminal displays the same green text: "LOADING..."

To finish the chapter, you must sit in the chair at the far end. When you do, the cricket sound cuts out. The fog lifts. For a single frame—one frame—the screen renders a high-resolution photograph of a real dorm room. A messy bed. A poster of The Matrix. A half-eaten pizza.

Then the game crashes to desktop. No save. No credits.
