Directed by Laras Cahyo Purnomo (a name to watch in the emerging cinema luka or "wound cinema" movement in Indonesia), Cerita Amput rejects the glossy social realism of much Indonesian mainstream film. Shot in 4:3 aspect ratio on a modified DSLR, the color palette is desaturated to near-monochrome—greens bleed into gray, skin looks jaundiced under fluorescent hospital lights.
Key stylistic choices include:
In the landscape of Indonesian independent cinema, where horror and romance often dominate, Cerita Amput (roughly translating to “Amputee Story” or “An Amputated Story”) arrives as a quiet thunderclap. Directed by Ivan Andhito, this 2021 psychological drama defies easy categorization. It is not a film about physical amputation in the traditional medical sense, but rather a visceral exploration of emotional amputation—the severing of the self from hope, memory, and the future.
Starring a powerful Rukman Rosadi and the intense Yusuf Mahardika, the film is a slow-burn meditation on grief, toxic masculinity, and the desperate, often failed, attempts at human connection. Cerita Amput %5B2021%5D
The film follows Rama (played by a then-unknown stage actor, Abdullah Umar), a young motorcycle taxi driver in a congested Jakarta satellite city. One night, a routine ride ends in a catastrophic highway accident caused by a sleep-deprived truck driver. Rama survives but loses his right leg below the knee.
The narrative is deliberately episodic, refusing melodrama. Instead, it traces the mundane yet crushing aftermath: the phantom pain, the sudden financial collapse (his bike is totaled, with no insurance), the awkward pity from friends, and his mother’s quiet desperation as she sells her wedding jewelry for a ill-fitting prosthetic.
The film’s title works on two levels: it refers to Rama’s literal amputation, but also to the “amputated” future he had envisioned—becoming a courier business owner, marrying his girlfriend, Sari. Sari does not leave him dramatically; she simply stops returning calls after the second month, an absence felt more keenly than any fight. Directed by Laras Cahyo Purnomo (a name to
Pelaku: Karyawan magang (sebutlah Bimo) Kronologi: Karena pandemi, rapat dilakukan online via Zoom. Bimo mengira microphone-nya dalam keadaan mute (diam). Saat bos sedang menjelaskan target penjualan, Bimo memutuskan "latihan stand up comedy" untuk menghilangkan bosan. Dia bilang ke dirinya sendiri: "Jadi gitu, pak bos. Terus saya bilang 'itu mah gampang, santai atuh pak.' Lalu saya tertawa: ha ha ha." Puncak: Tiba-tiba Bos berhenti bicara. Semua peserta rapat diam. Terdengar suara Bimo: "Ha ha ha... Eh, ck. Kurang lucu ya?" Kata Amput: Bimo panik menekan tombol "Leave Meeting" dan tidak pernah bergabung lagi. Dia menulis status di LinkedIn: "Open to opportunities. Silakan DM. Amput."
Gak sengaja." Utas itu di-retweet puluhan ribu kali. Sejak saat itu, kata "Amput" berevolusi. Bukan lagi sekadar komentar, tapi menjadi label untuk narasi kegagalan komedi tingkat dewa. Cerita Amput premiered at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film

Cerita Amput premiered at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (2021) and later streamed on Bioskop Online. It earned praise for its restrained body horror—compared to early David Cronenberg mixed with the quiet dread of The Babadook—though some critics found its third act too abstract. The final shot (a single unbroken take of Rini’s empty wheelchair turning in slow motion) remains divisive: haunting for some, pretentious for others.
Audience reaction on Letterboxd includes tags like “slow burn,” “unsettling but beautiful,” and “needs subtitles for the whispered Javanese dialogue.”
Rama’s body was his tool (driving). Once amputated, he loses not just mobility but economic identity. The local disability allowance is a bureaucratic maze; a prosthetic costs three years of his previous wages. The film argues that disability in a developing urban economy is a form of slow death, not by illness but by irrelevance.
