This method requires no external downloads and works on all versions of WoW (Retail, Classic, Cataclysm Classic).

Procedure:

(Optional) Uncheck "Periodic Combat Text" to reduce screen clutter from damage-over-time ticks, or enable "Target Damage" to see damage dealt to your target by other players (useful for party leaders).

Result: White numbers for physical damage, yellow for spells/abilities, and green for healing will scroll upward from enemies and your character.

The native system is limited. It does not show incoming damage numbers (damage you receive) by default and struggles with high-frequency events. For detailed analysis, players use addons.
