A helpful review would note that:

  • To enable your own damage/healing numbers (above your character):

  • To see damage numbers scrolling (classic old-school style): how to enable damage numbers in wow

  • Better visuals (addon recommendation):

  • This method requires no external downloads and works on all versions of WoW (Retail, Classic, Cataclysm Classic).

    Procedure:

  • (Optional) Uncheck "Periodic Combat Text" to reduce screen clutter from damage-over-time ticks, or enable "Target Damage" to see damage dealt to your target by other players (useful for party leaders).
  • Result: White numbers for physical damage, yellow for spells/abilities, and green for healing will scroll upward from enemies and your character.

The native system is limited. It does not show incoming damage numbers (damage you receive) by default and struggles with high-frequency events. For detailed analysis, players use addons.

Recommended Addon: MikScrollingBattleText (MSBT) Why: MSBT separates combat text into two distinct scroll areas (incoming on left, outgoing on right) and allows full color/size customization. Classic uses a simpler system

    Procedure:

  • Under "Scroll Areas", adjust the trigger thresholds (e.g., "Only show critical hits above 5,000 damage").
  • Result: Highly granular, directional combat text that prevents visual overlap with your character model.
