HP systems use an ITE EC (Embedded Controller) chip. The SMC.bin method generates a one-time unlock code.
Requirements:
Steps:
Note: This method works because the lock code is derived from a machine-specific secret in the EC. The SMC generator computes the correct response.
HP provides a password reset tool called "HP BIOS Configuration Utility" (BCU). This tool can be used to reset the BIOS password.
Requirements:
Steps:
If the SMC method fails (rare on 440 G6), the EC’s I²C EEPROM (internal or external) can be reset by shorting clock/data lines during boot.
Risks: Permanently damage EC, brick laptop.
Procedure (conceptual):
Verdict: This works if your BIOS version supports it and if you have the unlock code. However, newer firmware (2020+) often disables this backdoor. If your screen doesn't show a code—only a password box—skip to Method 3.
The ability to bypass BIOS passwords via SPI reprogramming shows that physical access defeats firmware locking on the ProBook 440 G6. For full disk encryption (BitLocker, LUKS), however, BIOS access alone does not decrypt data. But BIOS password reset can allow booting from alternate media (USB), enabling brute-force attacks on OS passwords or installation of keyloggers.
HP’s Sure Start partially mitigates this by validating the BIOS region on boot, but advanced attackers can disable Sure Start by altering the Flash Descriptor or using a hardware programmer to write a clean ME region without S3 (Sure Start) enabled.
The BIOS password on HP business laptops like the ProBook 440 G6 prevents unauthorized boot device changes, BIOS setting modifications, and OS loading. Forgetting this password—or acquiring a locked device—poses significant access challenges. Unlike older systems, HP implements password storage in non-volatile memory (serial EEPROM) with checksums and, on recent BIOS versions, cryptographic protection.
